Traditional Shamanic Ritual in Contemporary Outer Mongolia - Sunday, March 17, 2002

The subject of time is most pertinent to evolving culture in modern day Mongolia. On the one hand, new technology, which compresses linear time and space, pushes Mongolia into the future; on the other, a resurgence of ancient shamanic tradition, now possible since the lifting of Soviet religious repression, revives rituals which open to sacred time and space. Slides will illustrate these ancient rituals and traditions as they are found in the context of the changing contemporary present.
